In a recent meeting with Jonathan Reynolds, Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira (British Independent Retailers Association), welcomed the government's renewed focus on supporting small businesses.
This development is particularly significant for Retra members, as the association is now part of Bira, ensuring that the voice of independent electrical retailers and servicing organisations is heard at the highest levels of government.
The high-level meeting, called at short notice, brought together business leaders from various sectors to engage directly with policymakers.
Secretary Reynolds outlined four key priorities for his department:
- Creating a "Mission-Driven Industrial Strategy" to boost productivity and promote clean, green energy initiatives.
- Supporting Small Businesses, with emphasis on improving cash flow and reforming the British Business Bank.
- Improving UK Trade by enhancing export capabilities and opportunities.
- Ensuring Fair Work Practices, focusing on improving working terms, conditions, and job security.
Mr Goodacre, representing both Bira and Retra interests, expressed enthusiasm for the government's priorities, particularly the focus on small business support. He highlighted the importance of reducing operational costs for independent retailers through business rates reform, addressing retail crime, and fostering investment in high streets.
He said: "Great to hear about the four priorities and even better to know that supporting small business is one of those priorities. I am looking forward to further discussions to make this a reality for indie retailers by reducing the cost of running a shop through business rates reform, reducing retail crime and encouraging investment in our high streets."
Mr Goodacre also emphasised the need for the government to understand the pressures facing all independent retailers, including Retra members. Of particular concern is the proposed recycling legislation, which Bira and Retra believe must be shared equally between manufacturers and consumers, rather than being passed on to retailers."It is great for Bira to have been invited to such an early meeting. We will be following up by reaching out to the business ministers once they have been announced," Mr Goodacre added.
This engagement with the Department for Business and Trade underscores the government's commitment to supporting the independent retail sector, including electrical retailers and servicing organisations represented by Retra. As part of Bira, Retra members can expect their interests to be actively promoted in these high-level discussions, potentially leading to more favourable policies and support for the industry.
Retra will continue to work closely with Bira to ensure that the specific needs of electrical retailers and servicing organisations are represented in future discussions with the government. The combined efforts aim to create a more supportive business environment for all independent retailers across the UK.
